Consultation for Unerupted tooth

Your dentist or oral surgeon can evaluate your teeth and mouth to determine if you have impacted  teeth or if another condition is causing your problems. Such evaluations typically include:

• Questions about your dental symptoms and general health
• An examination of the condition of your teeth and gums
• Dental X-rays that can reveal the presence of impacted teeth, as well as signs of damage to teeth or bone

The most common cause for unerupted teeth is the lack of space for the tooth to erupt.

Anoter common cause is obstruction by a reatined milk/baby tooth that should have fallen off at a prior period of time.

Cysts and tumors may also obstruct eruption of the teeth.

Other possible causes for non-eruption of teeth include infection, trauma and systemic conditions, which cause underdevelopment of the jaws, structural defects of the teeth or poor quality of bone.

Unerupted teeth maybe asymptomatic (no symptoms of pain/discomfort), in which case they do not require any treatment.

If an obstruction to eruption of the tooth can be clearly identified, e.g. a milk/baby tooth, it should be removed.

Treatment options for the management of impacted teeth are separated into four categories: observation, intervention, relocation and extraction.

Early diagnosis allows the most appropriate treatment to be undertaken, often reducing the extent of surgery, orthodontic treatment and possible complications.
