Metal-ceramic restorations are commonly advocated and used in restorative dentistry. Because of the brittle nature of ceramic, occasional fractures are observed. The fracture (failure) of the ceramic portion can occur due to eating habits, trauma, laboratory mistakes, iatrogenic factors, or the inherent structure of the ceramics.
Keeping in mind the cost of a metal-ceramic restoration (crown) and the number of appointments required, replacement of such fractured crowns is a time-consuming and expensive matter in dentistry. With the introduction of new adhesive restorative materials and techniques, replacement of such defective restorations is no longer the only valid option; instead, a more conservative repair approach can easily be applied.
This treatment modality is viable, economical, conservative, and may be performed in a single clinical session without requiring the removal of the crown.
Anterior repairs will have greater success and longevity than posterior repairs.
Can discolor with time.
Occlusal (Biting surface) fractures are usually due to thin porcelain, and any repair will also be too thin to with-stand biting forces. For posterior teeth, in these circumstances, polishing the porcelain or replacement is the best solution.
In some cases, porcelain fractures leaving a significant surface of metal exposed are difficult to achieve predictable repair.
