Problems Treated with Fluoride Varnish Application

»

Fluoride varnish is a highly concentrated topical fluoride used to prevent formation of cavities. It also helps remineralize teeth and is a sticky gel that coats the surface of the tooth and releases fluoride over time. This treatment is mainly useful for children, elderly people, and people who are prone to having tooth decay (high risk for dental caries). Due to its ease of application and proven efficacy, it is widely used in a majority of dental clinics across India.

The major role of fluoride varnish is to protect and strengthen teeth against attacks by acids produced by bacteria and sugary foods, thus preventing periodontal disease and caries. It's very useful for people who have:

  • Early signs of tooth decay.
  • Exposed root surfaces.
  • High susceptibility to cavities.
  • Orthodontic appliances.

Fluoride varnish can remineralize damaged enamel, reverse early decay and lower the risk of future dental issues.

Fluoride varnish works best for:

  • Children and teens: To help protect developing teeth against cavities.
  • Adults with dry mouth: Commonly linked to medications or medical conditions.
  • Seniors: Fight against root decay and sensitivity.
  • For patients with braces or dental restorations: To guard difficult the clean surfaces.
  • High cavity risk: Important due to poor dental hygiene or diet

Some formulations of fluoride varnishes include:

  • Sodium Fluoride Varnish: Most widely used due to the high fluorine concentration.
  • Calcium Fluoride Varnish: It adds extra calcium that fortifies the enamel.
  • Fluoride Varnish with Xylitol: Fluoride combined with xylitol provides some antibacterial properties.

Applying involves the following steps:

  • Cleaning: The teeth are cleaned to eliminate plaque and debris.
  • Drying: The teeth are dried with air or gauze.
  • Application: The varnish is painted onto the tooth surfaces using a brush.
  • Setting: The varnish hardens upon contact with saliva, forming a protective layer.

The whole process can take a matter of minutes and is done without anesthesia.

  • Protects your teeth from getting cavities: Decreases the chances of getting cavities by up to 40%.
  • Reinforces enamel: It encourages remineralization of weakened enamel.
  • Sensitivity reduction: Help to shield exposed root surfaces.
  • Gentle and non-invasive for all age groups.
  • Fast and simple treatment: Can be used during regular dental check-ups.

Compared to other fluoride treatments, fluoride varnishes:

  • Stays on the teeth longer, offering prolonged protection.
  • Requires less patient cooperation, making it ideal for children.
  •  Reduced risk of ingestion and ensuring safety.

Fluoride varnish usually lasts months at a time. Dentists, however, recommend that it be reapplied every 3–6 months to provide optimal protection, especially for at-risk patients.

The whole applications takes 5–10 minutes. It is very convenient with patients being able to eat and drink after 30 minutes.

The price of fluoride varnish in India will depend on the clinic, city, and requirement of the patient, and typically ranges from ₹500 to ₹2,000 per session. Most dental insurance plans cover this preventive care.

Although fluoride varnish is safe, some rare side effects might include:

  • Reversible tooth staining (can be brushed off easily).
  • Individuals with sensitivity may experience mild allergy.
  • Unpleasant taste, which fades quickly.

Although very effective, fluoride varnish:

  • Needs to be reapplied regularly.
  • May not work so well in the highly advanced caries cases.
  • Should not replace good oral hygiene habits.

Fluoride varnish alternatives are:

  • Fluoride gels and foams: They are delivered using trays but not as convenient.
  • Fluoride mouth rinses: They are contraindicated in toddlers due to the risk of swallowing.
  • Dental sealants: It provide protection from pits and fissures but will not strengthen enamel.

Post-treatment care is simple:

  • Do not eat or drink for 30 minutes.
  • Do not brush or floss for 4–6 hours.
  • Follow the Same Oral Hygiene Routine Follow up visits as suggested by the dentist.
